Women's Centre at Pettah, Trivandrum, Kerala
Thiruvananthapuram: Thousands of people are visiting the state capital from all over. Additionally, tens of thousands of people work in administrative centers from different districts. Protests draw many people. In addition, many patients receive treatment at major hospitals. There aren't any women-friendly toilets or breastfeeding centers in this important political, administrative, and social hub. Despite the fact that there are a lot of women working today, administrators are not ready to check if employers are providing such legal facilities in their workplaces.
When people spend crores on beautification/renovation programs, when they plan new projects, when they prepare parks or when they construct structures like auditoriums, they are not prepared to prepare women/child-friendly systems. There are no such entertainment centers in Thiruvananthapuram city if you check the main entertainment centers. Despite spending crores on decoration and luxuries, infrastructure development often ignores such centers.
Women-friendly restroom 'on rest'
A rest room and cafeteria were inaugurated in Pettah in December 2022 with high expectations. As of yet, this center has not begun operating. Under the municipality's women's welfare scheme, 25 lakhs have been spent from the municipal plan fund. In the compound of the Pankajakshan Memorial Open Air Auditorium, the center was built. Mothers alighting at the Pettah railway station and women visiting the park and open air auditorium will find this center useful. The building was designed to include drinking water, breastfeeding corners, diaper changing areas, napkin vending machines, and napkin incinerators. The adjacent cafeteria is open to everyone. Women's friendly center maintenance is also handled by the cafeteria caretakers working on a contract basis. Pettah ward councilor C.S. Suja Devi, Chairperson of the City Planning Standing Committee, told the reporter of 'Madhyamam' that tenders have been invited for the cafeteria.
Why Breastfeeding Centers?
A child is the state's most valuable asset. In order to protect the health of all children, all children must be breastfed from an early age. A baby's first vaccine is breast milk. In the fight against disease and death, breast milk is the most important thing.
In addition to physical health, breastfeeding contributes to children's mental and cognitive development. The UNICEF estimates that breastfeeding can prevent 20,000 breast cancer cases and save more than 820,000 children under the age of five from death.
